My original plan was to visit Sri Lanka. While I was only planning the trip, one of my colleagues at work mentioned Thailand as one of the most beautiful countries he has ever visited. Since then, the only thing I could think about was this country.
I tried to convince two friends, with whom I had to go to Sri Lanka, if they wouldn’t like to replace the destination with Thailand. Unfortunately, without success. I do not know what was in it but eventually the plan to go for Sri Lanka got cancelled. My friend wasn’t allowed to leave work (when he was visiting Czech Republic his flight got cancelled so he has to extend his visit and take more days off which led to the cancellation of the trip).
Disappointed by the cancellation of the trip, I began to seriously consider Thailand.
As usual, nobody in my neighbourhood had the money and enough time. Just like when I wanted to visit the Isle of Skye (you can read about it here: https://eldaexplorer.com/2017/02/20/isle-of-skye-eng/ ).
After a few days, however, another cool coincidence occurred and on November 12th 2016 the website “Letenky za babku” launched a new forum – Searching for travel buddies. Without hesitating and with no expectations whatsoever I posted there that I am searching for someone to travel with to Thailand – in February/March 2017.
I have to say that there was a response really and a few people wrote me back. Some of them disagreed with the date which I originally had in mind or by the time something suddenly changed in their plans and they had to cancel their part on this trip.
Ultimately, I found one person. At that time I was at home and we got the last chance to organize our meeting, before I took my flight from Slovakia. At the last minute, we met but only for one hour ( just to know if we have some common interests and same expectations about this trip, also to know if that other person is not some weirdo or vagabond haha)
Second time we met at the airport in Prague, two hours before going to Bangkok.
We bought flight tickets from Prague to Bangkok with stopover in Dubai and the way back, the cost was 500euros / this means that a one way ticket was for 250 euros (this was the most expensive item of the trip). I had to admit that two weeks before our flight from Prague I’ve seen offers where price dropped to only 300 euros, Unfortunately, I don´t have such a flexible job to let my boss in work know about my almost one month vacation just two weeks before I leave. But if your work allows that, my advice to you is to wait as much as you can, maybe you will save more than 200 euros .
Our adventure started on 24.2 and we arrived back on 13.3
First stop : BANGKOK
Accommodation: ROYAL VIEW RESORT (24.2-27.2) Superior double room
price : 4900 THB for two persons
The first thing you will never forget once you arrive to Bangkok is the moment when you open the door from the airport and you will step on the Thai land. Yes, its beaut, until you get slapped from the heat (literally) and heavy air (but it’s just temporary after some time you will get use to it). Even today, I still remember the feeling that we were left paralyzed there, what a pity that nobody was recording it on camera, we had to look funny.
We got into taxi , of course, the taxi driver was pretending that his taxameter was broken. We dismissed it for the first drive and he took us to the hotel for 250 Thai bahts. Anyway, I loved using TUK-TUKs for transportation and the negotiation with the TUK-TUK drivers. Sometimes they dropped the price down and you could save 300 Thai baht or more. I will not write here how Bangkok is, what we have seen, our experience and so on. It would be for few more pages. But some parts of Bangkok you can see in the video at the end of this article.
I’ll give you a few tips for places that you need to visit at least:
- Grand Palace & Wat Prakeaw
- Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)
- Wat Pho
- Khao San Road
- Mesto (prechádzať sa pomedzi mrakodrapy, blúdiť po uličkách)
- Lumpini Park
Second stop: KRABI
Accommodation: AONANG GUEST HOME (27.2-3.3)
We travelled by plane to Krabi from Bangkok, we paid 30euros for the flight ticket. Here we also experienced a real tropical rainfall and it was raining on our first day at Krabi but only for two hours.
I’ll give you a few tips for places that you need to visit:
- Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)
- Railay Beach,Railay Beach Viewpoint
- Tab Kak Hang Nak Hill Nature Trail
Third stop: PHI PHI
We moved to this island by ship for 200bits – 5.50euros
Accommodation: PHI VILLA RESORT (bungalow deluxe) with breakfast, pool and private beach from where I had direct view on Maya Beach (every morning from 9h-12h I was almost completely alone on that beach, incredible beauty plus sunset from the beach, I really recommend this resort)
I’ll give you a few tips:
- Phi Phi viewpoint
- Full day trip (snorkeling, Bamboo island, Maya Bay, Sunset on boat, night swimming with plankton..)
Fourth stop: KOH YAO YAI
Here we were travelling by a speedboat for 200THB
Accommodation: YAO YAI BEACH RESORT (bungalow classic) with breakfast, 10 meters from the beach, direct view on the beach from the room – sunset terrace, all day empty beach (imagine a paradise)
price: 7200THB – (190eur for two people), per person 95 euros
This is a place where we met a great couple from Estonia and spent evenings with them drinking home-made rum. The funny thing was that also their surname was Rumm. We have been even invited to Estonia so another blog will be maybe from this destination. My partner went with them on a snow white beach, where there were several lonely palm trees, and you can see it in the video, or as soon as you go by boat from Phi Phi.
I really did enjoy this island only for doing absolutely nothing and just chilling. Enjoying nice dinners at one native homemade restaurant and slob around on the beach with a book in my hands. We had a chance to go and visit nearby islands but we were not interested. Well I think is enough to rent a scooter and take over the empty roads of the island, or getting stuck in the sand as my partner did.
If you are looking for a place where time has stopped and local people don´t speak English, a place where there aren’t too many tourists- this is the right place for you.
Fifth stop: CHIANG MAI
Accommodation: RUEN COME IN
Thailand’s Northern city of Chiang Mai is many traveler’s dream destination due to its delicious food, hundreds of temples, rich culture and budget travel opportunities.
I’ll give you a few tips:
- Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara
- Wat Phra Singh
- Thanin Market
- wat Doi Suthep
- Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
- Wat Lok Moli
- Chiang Mai Zipline
It is up to you which ones you choose to put into your schedule. Apart from the ones I mentioned here, there is much more and definitely it’s worth it to take the time and visit Chiang Mai.
Because Thailand is not only about beautiful beaches but also all about beautiful culture and its monuments. You may also be interested in the elephant – Chiang Mai Elephant Care.
Finally, on the way back while w had a stopover in Dubai, we also visited the highest building of the World.
Piece of paper, which they will give you to fill in on an airplane on the way to Bangkok (visas) you have to keep it for your way back, they will be asking for it when you will go back at the airport in Bangkok
You don´t need an inoculation but be careful about mosquitoes, it’s better if you wear long lightweight pants and blouses at night.
If you will pay with a credit card, it may happen that you will be charged 3% fee of the total transaction
You have to dress appropriately. When visiting religious sights, temples. Dress- code is definitely no tank tops and either wear pants or a long skirt or dress. Women must be covered above the knees at least and should not have shoulders exposed For men, it is a little easier, men should be wearing long trousers and a T-shirt. I bought two lightweight cotton trousers / harem / yoga style and I didn´t feel warm in it at all
Summary: Price for flight tickets plus accommodation – 927eur …. the basic budget … (for me the golden middle way, you can find accommodation in half prices if you like )
In this summary price I did not include travelling by plane in Thailand or all our transfers with boats or individual trips ( a zippline for example). It is up to you where you want to go and what you want to see. Otherwise, lunch meal cost 5 euros and prices are low.
I hope I have helped you with the basic information you need to know and which I was able to learn on this trip. At the end of this article, you can still watch a detailed videos from these 17 days.
